Diese offensichtlich vollkommen unterschiedliche Bewertung Justinians durch ein und denselben Autor hat im Laufe der Forschung nicht nur immer wieder die Frage aufgeworfen, ob es sich tatsächlich um ein und denselben Autor handelt, sondern auch zu der Frage geführt, welches Bild des Kaisers das zutreffendere ist. In dieser Hausarbeit steht allerdings nicht Justinian im Zentrum des Interesses, sondern dessen Feldherr Belisar. Dabei soll die Frage beantwortet werden, ob und wenn ja, wie die Darstellung Belisars durch Prokop in den Bella und den Anecdota voneinander abweicht.
Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung steht additionally nicht das Streben nach möglichst objektiven Informationen und Fakten über die Perser-, Vandalen- oder Gotenkriege, sondern die Darstellung Belisars durch Prokop. Da der begrenzte Umfang einer Hausarbeit eine adäquate Beschäftigung mit allen Teilen der Bella nahezu unmöglich macht, wird sich in den folgenden Ausführungen ausschließlich auf Prokops Darstellungen der Perserkriege konzentriert.
Diese Einschränkung bietet folgende Vorteile: Zum einen wird dadurch der Umfang der Darstellungen auf ein in einer Hausarbeit bearbeitbares Maß reduziert. Zum anderen umfassen die ersten beiden Bücher der Bella, in denen die Perserkriege im Mittelpunkt stehen, nahezu den gesamten Zeitraum, in denen Prokop in Belisars Diensten stand, von 527 n. Chr. bis etwa 540 n. Chr. Des Weiteren bilden sie in ihrer Darstellung zwei zeitliche Schwerpunkte, nämlich zu Beginn und zum Ende dieses Zeitraumes. So lassen sich Einstellungsänderungen Prokops gegenüber Belisar, zu denen es im Laufe dieser thirteen Jahre kam, auf demselben Kriegsschauplatz und im selben Werk nachvollziehen.
